Stephenie Meyer's hugely popular Twilight series has finally hit the
big screen. Starring Robert Pattinson (of Harry Potter fame-he played
Cedric in Goblet of Fire), and Kristen Stewart (Into the Wild),
Twilight, the first book in the series, has finally been brought to
life.
Twilight tells the tale of Bella Swan, who has just moved to the small,
rain-soaked town of Forks, Washington to live with her father. Once
there, she meets and soon falls in love with the beautiful and
mysterious Edward Cullen. She knows something is different about him
from the moment she meets him, and she is determined to find out his
secret. Before long she learns what he is, and how dangerous loving him
could be, but this knowledge could never keep her from loving him
anyway.
Despite a vampire being a main character, the story told in both the
book and the movie is very real. The fact that Edward is a vampire adds
to the story rather than taking away from it-it simply makes the love
story a little more complex. The emotions felt by both Bella and Edward
are strong and complicated and overwhelming, and it is the intense love
story that drives the plot. That doesn't mean that there isn't plenty
of action waiting in the wings as well, however. Whenever you find
yourself dating a vampire, you can pretty much count on your life being
endangered at some point, and Bella certainly finds herself in a sticky
situation as a result of her relationship with Edward.
The storyline of the movie actually remains very true to the book,
though there are a few points where the story strays a bit from Meyer's
original. Perhaps one of the biggest disappointments for fans of the
book is the lack of screen time for Jacob Black, who plays a much
larger role in the books. In the movie's defense, though, there were a
lot of characters to introduce and keep straight, and making Jacob more
prominent might have been too much of a challenge.
While the movie is well-paced and there is a good amount of action,
especially towards the end, what is really important is the love story
between Bella and Edward. While Stewart and Pattinson don't always seem
to pull off the passion and conflict that is so intense in the books,
it is still believable. Viewers who haven't read the books actually
have an advantage when seeing the movie because they are not entering
with any preconceived notions about the characters. The movie is
definitely worth seeing,
regardless of whether you have read the book. Vampires may not be real,
but the love between Edward and Bella certainly is, and their story
will lure you in, whether you want it to or not.
